Books and Me

December 27th, 2009 Comments off

Since I’ve moved up to London and had to put up with 2 x 40 minute commutes each day I’ve been reading more and more books. As a child I used to read a fair bit but they were mostly Hardy Boys and other such non-taxing books. I never really made the step past those types of books, partly due to rubbish English teachers, partly due to preferring to spend time on the ol’ Computer but mostly just me being lazy.

Since I’ve got back into reading I have decided to educate myself as much as possible in reading and have tried to find a broad range of books from vintage classics, modern classics, current blockbusters (this less than the others) and graphic novels (read “Comics” :-) )

To keep track of what I’ve read and what I want to read I’ve been cataloguing the books on the living social website. It’s a good website and allows you to see what your friends have read and what they thought of it. However I understand that not everyone wants to join another social networking site so I decided to create a plugin for WordPress that allows you to view the info in your Living Social account on your website. It’s still in a very early state and currently only really works for my account, though I’ll hopefully get some time to develop it into a fully fledged plugin.

The result of this? My website now includes a Books page that uses the plugin to view all the books I’ve read, want to read or are reading currently. Have a view of my book catalogue and if you have any suggestions for books that you think I might like stick ‘em in the comments.

Website modifications

July 19th, 2009 Comments off

As you can probably see I’ve changed my website again. The big change is that I’ve decided to switch to using wordpress instead of my own custom software. It has a lot of cool features (like an app for the iPhone that I’m using now) which would have been a lot of effort to write… and I just couldn’t be bothered. Maybe at some point I’ll try and bring the old theme across or find a more interesting one… but for now this will do.

In other news I’m now on Twitter. You can see my last couple of tweets in the sidebar or if you want to follow me I’m @Mrs_Kensington.

After having numerous issues with csoft I’ve now moved my hosting to a different hosting company. If you can see this the website is now on the new host and everything should be groovy! If you come across any issues just either use the comments box or use the submit news link.

OpenGL under Mono.Windows.Forms

September 23rd, 2005 Comments off

This morning on my way to work I was thinking about how I was going to integrate the OpenGL Renderer into Inspire under Linux (yeah walking to work without my iPod is boring). For everything else so far I have used winforms and I would really like to keep it that way.

And as if by magic! Jonathon Chambers wrote an excellent blog entry yesterday on how to get OpenGL working under Mono’s WinForms implementation. Once I’ve reinstalled grub on my booting hard drive I’ll have to boot into linux and give it a try. I’ll hopefully get a chance this weekend but who knows… life has been rather hectic recently.

One of the reasons I haven’t had much time to work on Inspire is that I’ve been working on the Content Mangement System for this website. The backend now uses the excellant xinha, a wysiwyg html(link) editor and has full support for editing news, articles, menu layout and images. From the visitors side the most noticable change is the new comments system. This will soon be upgraded to use xinha as well once I’ve had a chance to lock the editor down a bit to stop malicious people breaking things.

This isn’t the only website that uses my Content Management System, apart from the (under development) Inspire website, Saving the World and Other Stories also uses it. This is a website run by a friend of mine and contains his film reviews and any political or existential rants. It’s been useful having a non computer person to test my CMS to find all the bugs and help me improve the user interface.

RSS Feed

February 3rd, 2005 Comments off

I have now added an rss feed(?) to this website which will give you the latest 10 news items that have been posted on this website. If you have firefox a blue star should have appeared in the bottom right hand corner otherwise you can click on the xml graphic on the right hand side.

Search and DirectX Tip added

January 7th, 2005 Comments off

I’ve done a few more improvements to the site. The search system now fully works. It searches the news and articles stored on the site and displays a summary of the item.

I’ve also added my first DirectX tip. This can be viewed by clicking on the link at the side.

A Year Passes…

November 15th, 2004 Comments off

Well a year has passed since my last news item and we have another redesign. The php backend has been re-written giving me more powerful web based administrative tools. This means it will be easier to update the website wherever i am. The website should also be xhtml and CSS(link) (Cascading Style Sheets) compliant though i will need to do more tests before I stick the images up.

I’ve also split the site into 4 sections; news, personal, programming and projects. The news section is obvious what it contains (hint: your reading it). The personal section contains information about myself. The programming section will contain useful tips that I discover whilst programming. The final section will feature projects I have finished or am working on.

The projects section currently contains my Java3D tests and my Java Soliatire applet. The Inspire Engine is my cross-platform game engine that I am currently working on. Written in C#, using Managed DirectX and the Tao Framework. I shall put more information up about this later on.

New Content

June 26th, 2003 Comments off

I added alot more content today. I’ve finally put the information about my major project up. This contains my write up in html(link) and pdf format as well as the actual mail protocol implementation which I have released under the GPL. This can be found by clicking on the major project link to the right. I’ve also finally put in the page about Caroline which can be found from the About Me page.

I’m also working on the page about me as a computer professional. This page will contain information about my degree and contain a copy of my CV. This page should be completed in a couple of days.

More content added

November 30th, 2002 Comments off

I have now completed the “About Me” section. This provides terribly interesting information about me and my interests. It can be found [link removed].

I also found an old Java Solitaire game i wrote about 1/2 a year ago. I’ve now converted it to an applet and u can play that from [link removed].

I will try and find the time to add information to the other pages on this site as soon as possible.

Another site redesign

November 20th, 2002 Comments off

As you may have noticed i’ve done another site redesign. This one doesn’t use inline frames anymore and therefore works on all browsers that i have tested it on (at least IE5+, Mozilla & Konqueror).

It also uses perl in more subtle ways. Instead of running a perl script to generate the news page everytime someone views my site, it now generates the news everytime the news is changed and saves it as a static page. This uses less processing power on the side of the server and should result in faster loading of pages for you viewers.

I’ll be putting more information on to my site as soon as i can find some time.
